After being marketed online as an efficient weight-loss treatment, a current trend on the popular video app TikTok has exacerbated a shortage of the diabetic drug Ozempic.
People with diabetes in Australia are suffering due to a lack of medication, with GPs across the country being instructed to prioritize prescriptions for those with the disease.
The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) and several other medical organizations, including Diabetes Australia and the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia, issued a joint statement last month explaining that "Due to extensive prescribing Ozempic for the management of obesity, which it is not recommended for," Ozempic is currently scarce.
Novo Nordisk, a Dutch firm, manufactures the injectable semaglutide drug, which is an important medication for people with type 2 diabetes. The statement urges doctors to limit Ozempic prescribing and dispensing to the following uses:
"Inadequately managed type 2 diabetes mellitus requires the following treatment in addition to diet and exercise:
In addition to other pharmacological medications for the treatment of type 2 diabetes when metformin is not tolerated or contraindicated"
Ozempic's popularity surged on social media about the same time that the US Food and Medicine Administration authorized Wegovy, a similar drug made by Novo Nordisk, for chronic weight management. Segovia is now being investigated by the TGA.
The hashtag #ozempic, which has over 76.3 million views as of writing, as well as #ozempicaustralia, #ozempicweightloss, and #ozempicjourney have been used by Australian TikTok users to track their weight loss success.
"There are a lot of risks people need to be aware of," Dr. Karen Price, president of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners, told the Guardian. "Most importantly, neither the UK nor Australia currently endorses it for weight loss."The high demand is not deterring patients who truly require diabetes treatment because it is being used off-label.
Price also cautioned against the potential negative effects of using Ozempic for weight loss, such as nausea and vomiting. There are other precautions to take if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
